After losing my sweet husband suddenly a week before I was going to retire to be with him, a friend of mine who had also recently lost her husband, loaned me this book. It saved me by explaining all the stages of grief. I had lost my parents several years ago, only months apart, and as hard as that was, nothing could have prepared me for losing my soulmate of 45 years. I thought I was losing my mind until I read this book. I bought extra copies to share with friends who also recently lost someone. It has been 2 months since I lost my husband, but I still go back to this book to find answers, especially since I just lost a dear friend of 45 years just a week ago, and another dear friend of 50 years has Stage 4 lung cancer who can't tolerate chemo. This is not a book that anyone really wants to have to read, but I needed it after my 26 year old son died unexpectedly 2 months ago. The book is short and easy to read - when you are bereaved it's hard to focus on anything complicated. Descriptions of what you're feeling are on one side of the page and explanations of these feelings and suggestions of how to deal with them are on the facing page. It's easy to refer to at a later time also.
I ended up buying 5 copies and have already given them all away to people who were grieving. This book let's you know that what you are feeling are the normal feelings of grief and teaches you that grief is a process that we can't avoid or rush. Everyone goes through it in their own way and at their own pace. God bless Bob Baugher for writing this book and selling it for only $5.00. I'm sure he has given many grieving people hope and comfort.
Dr. Baugher has also written a book called "Understanding Guilt During Bereavement" which is excellent.
Dr. Bob Baugher is renowned for spending time with and offering grief counseling to countless families. He helped me personally through a loss that I wouldn't have been able to handle otherwise. He is highly educated and has experienced grief of his own; many react angrily at his insights and offerings of emotional support via this book but anger is also a common response to loss. This book may help you or it may not, but if you follow through with what is written within it I believe you'll feel somewhat of a weight lifted as you continue on your path to acceptance through grief.
I found some of the information conflicting and borderline judgemental. I was left with more questions than answers. Left me angry.
I believe I was just not ready for this book, hopefully in the future I will have a more accurate review. Right now it not the time, sorry.
An outstanding thoughtful guide for anyone who is struggling with the loss of a loved one!
This book has excellent references to the grief stages, it's an easy read in a difficult situation, and is very validating!
